The Baler Preventive Maintenance Checklist Every Operator Should Know

The average commercial baler has a service life of 15–20 years with proper maintenance — or 6–8 years without it. The difference isn't expensive parts; it's a consistent PM routine that takes less than 30 minutes per week.

Daily Checks (Operator Level)

Before first cycle:

  • Check hydraulic fluid level — top off if below the sight glass
  • Inspect for new fluid leaks on floor or around cylinders
  • Check wire supply — enough for the day's volume?
  • Verify door safety interlock functions (open door = no cycle)
  • Listen for unusual sounds on first cycle
  • After last cycle:

  • Clear any debris from the bale chamber
  • Report any new sounds, slow cycles, or wire jams to supervisor
  • Weekly Checks (Lead Operator or Maintenance)

  • Inspect hydraulic hoses for cracks, chafing, or seeping
  • Check cylinder rod for scoring or pitting
  • Lubricate ram guides and door hinges per manufacturer spec
  • Inspect tie wire channel for wear or burrs (horizontal balers)
  • Verify pressure gauge reads within normal operating range
  • Check electrical connections and control panel for corrosion
  • Monthly Checks

  • Change hydraulic filter (or per manufacturer interval)
  • Check hydraulic fluid condition — discolored or milky fluid means contamination
  • Inspect motor mounts and coupling
  • Check all fasteners on wear plates and knife edges
  • Test emergency stop function
  • Annual Service (Schedule with Your Tech)

    • Hydraulic fluid change and system flush
    • Cylinder seal inspection and replacement if needed
    • Ram wear plate measurement and replacement
    • Electrical panel inspection
    • Full pressure test and cycle time measurement
    • Tie head rebuild or replacement (horizontal balers)

    The Cost of Skipping PM

A hydraulic pump replacement runs $800–$2,500 in parts alone. A cylinder rod replacement with seals is $400–$1,200. An annual PM visit from Bandit typically runs a fraction of either — and catches both before they fail.
